ChatGPT SEO: how to rank in ChatGPT search
How ChatGPT search finds and cites pages: OpenAI's crawlers, Bing as a search provider, query rewriting, and the steps the evidence supports.
By Paul Maxwell, founder of AEO HQ
Published · Updated
To rank in ChatGPT search, a page must be retrievable by OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's search crawler, and your host or CDN must admit OpenAI's published IP addresses (opens in a new tab). OpenAI names Microsoft among ChatGPT's search providers (opens in a new tab), so get indexed by Bing. Then publish server-rendered pages that answer specific questions first, with checkable facts and honest dates. Placement is not guaranteed (opens in a new tab), and a review of 45 studies found no tactic with a proven, lasting effect (opens in a new tab).
This guide covers ChatGPT's web search only. For other assistants, see how ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Copilot find and cite sources. Getting your brand named as a recommended vendor works differently and is covered in how to get recommended by ChatGPT.
Scope and definitions
- ChatGPT search. The web search feature in ChatGPT. ChatGPT may search the web automatically when a question would benefit from current information (opens in a new tab), or a user can start a search.
- Ranking in ChatGPT search. Being one of the pages ChatGPT retrieves, cites, and links in an answer. There is no fixed list of positions. In a daily panel of four AI search tools, including ChatGPT, about 65% of cited sources changed from one day to the next (opens in a new tab) (preprint; 32 German-language prompts, January to March 2026; vendor-affiliated first author).
- ChatGPT SEO. The common name for this work, and one part of answer engine optimization (AEO). Most of it overlaps with ordinary SEO; AI search optimization explains the overlap.
- Retrieval and parametric knowledge. Retrieval means fetching pages at answer time. Parametric knowledge is what the model learned in training. ChatGPT does not always search: it ran a web search on 34.5% of queries in February 2026 (opens in a new tab) (vendor study; US clickstream panel). This guide covers the search route.
- Query fan-out. Turning one question into several narrower searches. OpenAI calls it rewriting (opens in a new tab).
How ChatGPT search works
OpenAI's crawlers and what each one does
OpenAI documents separate user agents for search, training, and user requests (opens in a new tab), and states that "each setting is independent of the others" (official documentation).
| User agent | What OpenAI says it is for | Does robots.txt apply? | Effect of blocking it |
|---|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfacing websites in ChatGPT's search results | Yes. Changes take about 24 hours. | The site "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links." |
| GPTBot | Crawling content "that may be used in training" OpenAI's models | Yes | Signals that your content should not be used for training. Separate from search. |
| ChatGPT-User | Visiting a page when a user's question in ChatGPT or a Custom GPT calls for it. It does not crawl automatically. | "robots.txt rules may not apply" | Not a search control: it "is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search." |
| OAI-AdsBot | Checking the safety of pages submitted as ChatGPT ads | Not stated | Matters only if you buy ChatGPT ads. |
Every row comes from OpenAI's crawler documentation (opens in a new tab). OpenAI publishes an IP address list for each agent (opens in a new tab). If you allow both OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot, OpenAI "may use the results from just one crawl for both use cases." (opens in a new tab)
Where ChatGPT's results come from
OpenAI's documentation names three sources of pages:
- Its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot.
- Search providers. ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers," and the help center lists two of them: Microsoft and Shopify (opens in a new tab). It does not name Google.
- Bing, for company workspaces. In Enterprise and Edu workspaces, ChatGPT "may share disassociated search queries with the Bing search engine to return web results." (opens in a new tab)
Independent studies point the same way. 87% of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top organic results, against 56% for Google's results (opens in a new tab) (vendor study; about 100 queries, February 2025). Across 55,936 queries, ChatGPT's spread of cited domains differed significantly from Google's but not from Bing's, which the authors read as reliance on Bing (opens in a new tab) (preprint; July and August 2025).
Bing also feeds Microsoft Copilot, which sends the search queries it generates to the Bing search service (opens in a new tab), so this work carries over to ranking in Microsoft Copilot. Google is a separate job, covered in how to rank in Google AI Overviews: Google's AI features can only show pages that are indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet (opens in a new tab).
How ChatGPT rewrites questions
ChatGPT search "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries," and may then send "additional, more specific queries" (opens in a new tab). OpenAI's own example turns a question about drugs that target CCR8 for cancer into the search "CCR8 immunotherapy drug development 2025," then "CHS-114 conference 2025." (opens in a new tab) Saved memories may also shape the rewrite (opens in a new tab).
So ranking for the prompt as typed predicts little. On 15,000 long-tail prompts, only 12% of the links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot appeared in Google's top 10 results for the same prompt, and overlap with Bing's top 10 was about 10% on average (opens in a new tab) (vendor study; July 2025). The two studies fit one picture: ChatGPT cites pages from an index, but reaches them through rewritten queries.
What ChatGPT's crawlers can read
- Vercel's network data found that "none of the major AI crawlers currently render JavaScript" (opens in a new tab) (platform data, December 2024).
- In a test of one page, queried repeatedly on each system, no AI system read facts that appeared only in JSON-LD during a live fetch, and only Gemini ran JavaScript (opens in a new tab) (practitioner experiment, October 2025).
- Bing's guidelines say to avoid "hiding critical content behind client-side rendering" (opens in a new tab) (official documentation).
A fact that exists only in a chat widget, a script-rendered tab, or structured data may be invisible when ChatGPT fetches the page.
Freshness
- ChatGPT's citations averaged 958 days old, against 1,416 days for Google's organic results (opens in a new tab) (vendor study; 16.975 million cited URLs, July 2025). The study's text gives 1,432 days for organic results, but its own table lists 1,432 days for AI Overviews and 1,416 for organic results; this page uses the table.
- In 252,000 controlled trials across six language models, a 2026 date instead of a 2019 date raised the odds of a page being cited first in all six (opens in a new tab) (peer-reviewed; laboratory setting; the authors work for a marketing-software company).
- Injecting newer dates moved passages up in LLM rerankers, shifting the top 10's average publication year by up to 4.78 years (opens in a new tab) (peer-reviewed; laboratory setting).
Cited pages are still years old on average, so recency looks like a tie-breaker between relevant pages, not a substitute for relevance. Faked dates are manipulation.
How ChatGPT traffic shows up: utm_source=chatgpt.com
ChatGPT "automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs" (opens in a new tab) (official documentation), so analytics tools can separate its visits. Google Analytics 4 also has a default "AI Assistant" channel for users arriving "from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, or Grok" (opens in a new tab). Setup is covered in how to track AI referral traffic in GA4. In server logs, OAI-SearchBot requests are crawls, while ChatGPT-User requests are, by OpenAI's definition (opens in a new tab), visits made because a user's question called for the page.
Steps
The steps below are AEO HQ's recommendations, based on the facts above.
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. Find the group that applies to it and make sure public pages are not disallowed. A crawler obeys the group that matches its name and falls back to the
User-agent: *group only when no group matches (opens in a new tab), so a rule added later toUser-agent: *will not reach a bot named in its own group (IETF standard, 2022). Changes take about 24 hours (opens in a new tab). Decide on GPTBot separately: allowing it is the only way into future training data, but no study has measured whether that raises a brand's visibility. - Allow OpenAI's IP addresses at your host, CDN, and firewall. Bot protection can block AI crawlers that robots.txt allows. On Vercel, for example, the AI Bots ruleset can be set to Deny, which "blocks all traffic identified as coming from AI bots," and Bot Protection's Challenge mode serves "a JavaScript challenge to traffic that is unlikely to be a browser" (opens in a new tab) (official documentation; both are off by default). In your logs, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User requests should get 200 responses.
- Get indexed by Bing. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit an XML sitemap with accurate
lastmoddates, and send new and changed URLs through IndexNow, as Bing's guidelines ask (opens in a new tab). Bing reported that 12% of new URLs clicked in its results were first discovered through IndexNow (opens in a new tab) (platform statement, 2023). The IndexNow FAQ lists Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yep, and Amazon as participants (opens in a new tab); Google is not one of them. - Put every important fact in server-rendered HTML. Prices, specifications, definitions, dates, and the author's name belong in the text the server sends. Check with
curlor the page source: the facts should appear without JavaScript. - Answer the question in the first two or three sentences. Use the buyer's words in the title, the H1, and the first paragraph. Bing's guidelines ask for essential information "near the top." (opens in a new tab)
- Cover the sub-questions that rewriting produces. A buyer's question fans out into narrower searches about price, scope, comparisons, and procedure. Answer each where you have something real to say, on a distinct page or section. Do not generate a page for every variation; that mistake is listed below.
- State specific, checkable facts. In the 252,000-trial study, a stated price raised the odds of being cited first in all six models, and specifications, comparisons, evidence, confident wording, and consistent claims helped in at least four; formatting alone had no consistent effect (opens in a new tab). Use real numbers only: in a separate benchmark, a rewrite that added statistics lowered rank in 19 of 24 settings (opens in a new tab) (peer-reviewed).
- Keep dates honest and content current. Show "Published" and "Updated" dates, change the updated date only with real edits, and update content when facts or guidance change (opens in a new tab).
- Earn mentions on other sites. In API tests of ChatGPT's search model, 93.5% of cited sources for well-known brands were earned media such as reviews and editorial coverage (opens in a new tab) (preprint; mid-2025). Across 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated at 0.664 with ChatGPT visibility, while link metrics such as the number of backlinks showed "very weak correlations" (opens in a new tab) (vendor study; correlation, not cause). The guide to brand mentions covers how to earn them honestly.
- Measure what happens. Segment
utm_source=chatgpt.comvisits, count OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User requests by URL, and run a fixed prompt set several times on different days. How to measure AI visibility gives a sampling plan. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report counts citations of your pages in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries (opens in a new tab), with the grounding queries behind them. It does not name ChatGPT, so treat it as a Bing-side signal.
What the evidence shows and does not show
Much published "ChatGPT SEO" advice comes from generative engine optimization (GEO) research, and much of it has not replicated.
Antipatterns
These are the most common antipatterns: habits that look useful but fail or backfire.
- Blocking OAI-SearchBot by accident. A firewall rule that denies AI bots removes the site from ChatGPT search even when robots.txt allows the crawler, because the host or CDN must also admit OpenAI's IP addresses (opens in a new tab).
- Mixing up the crawlers. Blocking OAI-SearchBot to stay out of training also removes the site from search, and blocking GPTBot does not remove it from search. The settings are independent (opens in a new tab).
- Keeping key facts where crawlers cannot read them. Chat widgets, script-rendered tabs, JSON-LD alone, and PDFs are the usual places.
- Building a page for every fan-out variation. Google says that creating separate content for every variation of a query, including fan-out queries, mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses violates its scaled content abuse policy (opens in a new tab), and its spam policies cover attempts to manipulate generative AI responses (opens in a new tab). Bing says large-scale content generated without oversight or editorial review "may be excluded from indexing." (opens in a new tab)
- Hiding text or instructions aimed at AI. In a newspaper test, hidden text on product pages made ChatGPT search's summaries "always entirely positive," overriding negative reviews on the same pages (opens in a new tab) (November 2024). OpenAI now runs "multiple automated AI-powered monitors to identify and block prompt injection attacks" (opens in a new tab), and Bing says content designed to manipulate language models "may result in reduced visibility or removal from search experiences." (opens in a new tab)
- Changing dates without changing content. Dates can move LLM rankings (opens in a new tab), which is why a date that reflects no real change is manipulation.
- Rewriting the whole site with an LLM, or relying on llms.txt and schema. The evidence table shows few gains from rewriting, some harm to retrieval, and no measured effect from either file.
- Reporting a "rank" from one screenshot. Cited sources change between runs, and OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed (opens in a new tab).

Frequently asked questions
How do I make my business show up in ChatGPT?
There are two routes. In the first, ChatGPT searches and cites your pages, which is what this guide covers. In the second, ChatGPT names your business from its training or from other sites that mention you; see how to get recommended by ChatGPT. Most businesses need both.
What are the ranking factors for ChatGPT search?
OpenAI says ChatGPT "ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information" (opens in a new tab) and does not list them. The documented part is eligibility: crawler access and IP access. Laboratory studies find that relevance, position in the retrieved results, a stated price, specifications, and recent dates raise the odds of being cited first (opens in a new tab). No one outside OpenAI has measured the weights on the live product.
Which tools help you rank in ChatGPT?
No tool can make ChatGPT cite a page; tools only measure. Free options are analytics filtered by utm_source=chatgpt.com, server logs, and Bing's AI Performance report, which covers Copilot and Bing (opens in a new tab). Prefer paid trackers that repeat each prompt and report the share of runs; see AEO HQ's comparison of measurement tools.
Do Google rankings help you rank in ChatGPT search?
Not directly, as far as OpenAI documents: its help center names Microsoft and Shopify as search providers, not Google (opens in a new tab). In the 100-query vendor study cited above, 56% of ChatGPT citations matched Google's results, at a median rank of 17, against 87% for Bing's top results (opens in a new tab). Google indexing matters for Google's own AI features (opens in a new tab).
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT's answers?
ChatGPT shows ads, but OpenAI says ads "are always clearly labeled and separate from ChatGPT's answers" and that "advertising does not influence the answers" (opens in a new tab) (company statement, August 2026).
